We use research based, developmentally appropriate curriculum to teach content. Just like elementary school teachers teach the standards set forth in the common core, preschool teachers are required to teach the standards defined by the North Carolina Foundations for Early Learning and Development (NC Foundations). We assess your child's progress towards the NC Foundations through a portfolio compiled on a system called Teaching Strategies Gold. When you come in for a parent-teacher conference, we will look over your child's portfolio and then talk about what that work means in terms of your child's developmental and educational gains. I also use other research based systems to teach your child. See below to learn more about the various systems I use.

What is The Creative Curriculum? The Creative Curriculum for Preschool is an award-winning research-based curriculum. The Creative Curriculum for Preschool features exploration and discovery as a way of learning, enabling children to develop confidence, creativity, and critical thinking skills. The Creative Curriculum for Preschool is based on 38 objectives for development and learning. These objectives are fully aligned with NC Foundations. The curriculum also offers daily opportunities to individualize instruction by helping teachers meet the needs of every learner, with a particular focus on English language development. The Creative Curriculum for Preschool prepares children for success with the Common Core State Standards through a rich collection of resources that help teachers guide all children to be as successful possible when they enter kindergarten.

What is Letterland?Letterland is a unique, phonics-based approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling to 3-8 year olds. The Letterland characters transform plain black letter shapes into child-friendly pictograms and they all live in an imaginary place called Letterland. Simple stories about the Letterland characters, explain the full range of dry phonics facts so that children are motivated to listen, to think and to learn. These stories explain letter sounds & shapes, allowing children to progress quickly to word building, reading and writing.

What is Conscious Discipline?Conscious Discipline is a research based system developed by Dr. Becky Bailey. In Conscious Discipline, students are taught appropriate coping skills to manage their feelings. Additionally, I have one guiding statement I use to teach rules and expectations to the children. Every day I tell the children, “My job is to keep you safe.” Then, they must make the commitment to “keep it that way.” Throughout the day, as children make both helpful and mistaken choices, I either thank each child for making safe choices, or remind the child that he needs to keep it safe. If you all are interested, we can have a parent seminar on Conscious Discipline later in the school year. If you have any questions you would like answered before then, please let me know.
